The Washington State Department of Veterans Affairs (WDVA) is pleased to announce an opportunity to truly make a difference in the lives of veterans as an **On-Call **Recreation and Athletic Specialist 1 at our Spokane Veterans Home (SVH).
The Washington State Department of Veterans Affairs (WDVA) is comprised of more than 800 dedicated staff who strives to fulfill WDVA's mission of "Serving Those Who Served." To achieve this mission, WDVA provides critical services to veterans and their families, both in the community and among four veterans' homes within the State of Washington. WDVA is a national leader in the quality of and advocacy for veterans claims submitted to the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs, reaching out to Washington's more than 600,000 veterans.
WDVA operates four veterans' homes in Port Orchard, Orting, Spokane, and Walla Walla providing Medicare and Medicaid nursing care for honorably discharged veterans, to include, in some instances, their spouses, widows or gold star parents.

**_Some of what you will be doing:_**
Serving those who served, the On Call Recreation and Athletic Specialist 1 position plans, organize and facilitate recreation programs under the supervision of Recreation and Athletic Specialist 4, which meets resident's social, cognitive, emotional and leisure needs.
**_Key Responsibilities:_**
Coordinates and facilitates therapeutic recreation programs assigned by supervisor that meet Spokane Veterans Home resident's social, cognitive, emotional and leisure needs; including special events, outings, daily large and small groups.
Facilitates assigned and needed one-on-one sessions for low functioning and isolated residents.
Assess new residents using Recreation History Assessment and facility interdisciplinary assessment.
Direct and assign volunteers, work study students and special groups
Support Recreation Department by assisting with special events and parties that are planned. (i.e. Father's Day Barbeque, Christmas, celebrations, Memorial services, Veterans holiday programs, etc)
Arrange monthly entertainment for resident birthday parties.
**_Required Qualifications:_**
Completion of high school or GED and one year of recreation experience.
Experience and education equivalent to one year of qualifying experience, or one year of college-level course work related to Therapeutic Recreation will substitute for the required experience.
Knowledge of MDS and experience in facilitating therapeutic recreation group programs.
Knowledge of progress notes and recreation assessments.
